Project Detail |
This project is to provide support, funded by the European Commission, for sustainable access to agricultural markets in South Sudan. Some of the worst social indicators are found in South Sudan. At least 80 percent of the population is income-poor. More than one third of the population is food insecure. The country’s economy is constrained by the sheer absence of roads and by the fact that any existing roads are of very poor quality. South Sudan’s fragmented transport infrastructure network has impeded agricultural producers in remote areas from effectively connecting to market centres. The objective of this project is to improve rural livelihoods by providing sustainable access to agricultural markets using appropriately engineered infrastructure approaches. UNOPS support will focus on the construction and maintenance of approximately 350 km of feeder roads in Greater Bahr el Ghazal (states of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Western Bahr el Ghazal and Warrap) incorporating the implementation of a maintenance and capacity building program and including the following main project activities: (i) Road construction and maintenance; (ii) Training of the government staff and local contractors; (iii) Establishing a maintenance unit within the State Ministries of Physical Infrastructure; and (iv) Procuring road maintenance and office equipment. |
