This project is a continuation of a previous action, and aims to assist the United Nations (UN) in fulfilling its obligations under the Agreement between the UN and the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) “Concerning the Establishment of the Extraordinary Chambers for Prosecution under Cambodian Law of the Crimes Committed during the Period of Democratic Kampuchea” which came into effect on 19 April 2005. The European Commission is providing financial support to the ECCC - Extraordinary Chamber in the Courts of Cambodia (known as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal) since a couple of years. Previously the funds provided by the EC to the national side of the ECCC were managed by UNOPS and the contribution to the international side was managed by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). Recently the EC decided to channel all funds through one entity which shall be UNOPS. Specifically, the first two components of the action will contribute to support the 2015 - 2016 remuneration packages to national and international judges, prosecutors, law clerks, and other ECCC staff or departments serving on both the national and international component of the Extraordinary Chambers. It is a contribution to the overall 2015 and 2016 budget of the ECCC through pool funding. The third component of the Action will help to implement an Awareness and Education Programme on the history of the Khmer Rouge era, aimed at secondary school and university students throughout Cambodia.
