Project Name Smart Agriculture Guidance and Enhancement Project Number 59042-001 Country / Economy Regional India Nepal Project Status Active The technical assistance (TA) will enhance the capacity of relevant government agencies in India and Nepal to introduce and implement digital solutions in agriculture, food, nature, and rural development (AFNR) sector projects to improve the productivity and market links of beneficiary farmers, thereby increasing their potential income. It will immerse project staff in international best practices through capacity building activities (including national and international study visits) with international and national subject matter experts. The TA will also provide technical support for identifying, designing, and implementing tailored digital solutions that address the specific needs of the AFNR sector in India and Nepal. These digital solutions will focus on enhancing training and market access opportunities for farmers who lack access to resources and guidance for productive and profitable farming practices. The solutions will provide (i) advisory and training on best farming practices through self-paced learning materials and a chatbot for customized learning assistance; (ii) resource optimization using artificial intelligence (AI)-driven soil testing and monitoring to optimize the use of water and fertilizers, (iii) crop protection via an AI-enabled pest and wildlife detection system; and (iii) access to essential market information and market linkages for both male and female farmers. Further, the TA will support the pilot implementation of these solutions to generate insights that will guide and inform the design of future scalable projects. The TA will initially support the following projects: (i) the Himachal Pradesh Subtropical Horticulture, Irrigation, and Value Addition Project in India; (ii) the Nuts and Fruits in Hilly Areas Project in Nepal; and (iii) the Sustainable Wetlands and Integrated Fisheries Transformation (SWIFT) Project in Assam, India [proposed loan]. The TA has the potential to expand coverage to other projects (and countries) facing similar challenges. |
