Comoros Project Notice - Management Of Natural Grazing Areas For The Development Of Small Ruminant Sheep And Goat Farming In The Oichili Dimani Community Area

Project Notice

PNR 69804
Project Name Management of natural grazing areas for the development of small ruminant sheep and goat farming in the Oichili Dimani community area
Project Detail This project aims to improve the food sovereignty of livestock farmers by increasing their agricultural income, including the breeding of small ruminants. This project helps strengthen the development of the small ruminant sector in order to more effectively address challenges in terms of food and nutritional security. The respective practice of extensive and intensive breeding of small ruminants would lead to an increase in the income of livestock farmers/producers and an improvement in their purchasing power. In addition, women involved in small-scale livestock farming and food and off-season crops will also have an income above the poverty line. The project will also contribute to the creation of jobs upstream and downstream and the involvement of several economic operators (suppliers of production factors, traders and the population), which should lead to an additional distribution of income through the project. Transhumance in the Comorosstill constitutes an important practice of sheep agropastoral systems in steppe environments. Its food contribution remains irreplaceable, especially during periods of drought for livestock farmers. This behavior helps to partly explain the resilience of sheep farms in rural areas. affected by the combination of the effects of variations in agricultural policies, increasing demographics, sociocultural evolution and increasing aridity. However, this project in the cited area constitutes a pilot experience because it will focus on: i) better organization of livestock farmers and agro-livestock farmers; ii) the extension of small ruminant sheep farming in the area; iii) the conservation, valorization, development and sustainable management of fodder potential; iv) poverty reduction through the creation of new jobs and the promotion of income. The proposed activities will help consolidate the actions already implemented on the technical level and in terms of the organization of livestock farmers and agro-livestock farmers
