Project Name Enhancing the Conservation Capacity of Encephalartos Barteri ssp. Allochrous in Kwanka, Plateau State.Kwanka – Pankshin LGA – Plateau Sate - Nigeria
Project Detail The project Enhancing the Conservation Capacity of Encephalartos Barteri ssp. Allochrous in Kwanka, Plateau State is a comprehensive initiative aimed at preserving the endangered Encephalartos Barteri ssp. Allochrous in its natural habitat. The species faces threats such as habitat loss and unsustainable trade, making conservation efforts critical. The projects core objectives include empowering local communities in the Kwanka region with the knowledge and skills needed to conserve Encephalartos Barteri ssp. Allochrous populations in situ. It also seeks to establish the capacity for seed collection and conservation in community nurseries, thereby contributing to sustainable management practices. To address the challenges, the project outlines specific outcomes, including involving smallholders in seed supply chains for native tree species restoration, organizing seed collection of the endangered species, and supporting Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) projects. The aim is notonly to protect the species but also to generate livelihood benefits, improve resilience, productivity, and enhance the conservation value of restored forests. By strengthening community-led actions involving women and youth for the protection of threatened species and ecosystems, the project will contribute to the GEF/SGP OP7 Nigeria Programme Strategy, Component 1 (1.1): Community Landscape and Seascape Conservation and Component 6 (6.1 & 6.3): Promoting Social Inclusion. In summary, this project represents a holistic approach to conservation, addressing not only the immediate threats to Encephalartos Barteri ssp. Allochrous but also fostering sustainable practices, community engagement, and the long-term health of the local ecosystems.
