Viva Energy will recondition an existing fuel tank and associated distribution infrastructure at their Pinkenba terminal to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Brisbane Airport; and develop and book and claim system enabling customers to claim the environmental benefits of SAF without necessarily purchasing the physical fuel. Need Reports from the aviation sector have estimated sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) will contribute between 50-70% of total decarbonisation in the aviation sector by 2050. The SAF industry in Australia, however, is in its early stages and this project has the potential to significantly impact the development of an Australian SAF industry. Along with stimulating the supply and demand of SAF, a functional SAF supply chain and enabling infrastructure will increase confidence and reduce barriers to the establishment of domestic manufacturing of SAF. Additionally, the book and claim element of the project will provide critical learnings essential for the development of SAF distribution and utilisation around Australia, including in regional locations and will allow a broad range of aviation customers to be involved. Viva Energy is committed to supporting the development of this industry through knowledge sharing, including the learnings from the demonstration outcomes, the development of the book-and-claim system and blending SAF at a terminal. |
