Project Detail |
The Metro Sao Paulo Line 2 - Green extension project represents a pivotal initiative aimed at enhancing mass transportation infrastructure, particularly in the eastern portion of Sao Paulo, benefiting low- and middle-income residents. Civil construction for the extension of Metro Line 2 is currently underway through parallel financing, comprising 8.3 km of tunnels and the construction of 8 new stations from Vila Prudente to Penha, which is being treated as an associated facility since it has not been financed by the World Bank. The project will finance the signaling and systems associated with that expansion. The signaling system will implement a high level of automation, enabling driverless operation and contributing to a reduction in the operational costs of the line. By allocating funds to signaling and systems, the project aims to enhance mobility and accessibility for citizens in this underserved residential area. Additionally, the project adopts a multifaceted approach and its second component will support Technical Assistance activities aimed at enhancing the overall efficiency and sustainability of SP Metro, including: a) the creation of centralized reporting channels for sexual harassment, streamlining the process for women and promoting standardized approaches, thereby promoting a secure environment for diverse participants in public transport; b) the structuring of a Public-Private Partnership for social housing developments near Metro Line 2 – Green stations, providing convenient access and attracting private investment; c) the implementation a monitoring system for early warnings against storms and flooding, starting with a pilot program to expand resilience across the entire network; and d) the maximization of ancillary revenue by exploring diverse income sources within and around stations, ensuring financial sustainability beyond traditional farebox revenue Therefore, beyond its immediate transportation goals, the project assumes broader significance by contributing to environmental sustainability and resilience. The expansion of a low-carbon transport alternative is expected to yield substantial climate benefits, relieving pressure on diesel-powered buses and fossil-fueled individual vehicles. The Project Development Objective of SOP1 is to improve low-carbon mobility, increase job accessibility and enable social housing in the Catchment Area of Line 2 - Green. |
