Project Name |
Artisanal oyster farming as a strategy for protecting mangroves on the eastern coast of Falcón, restoring natural oyster populations, and improving the socioeconomic well-being of oyster farmers and their families. |
Project Detail |
The purpose of this project is for oyster farmers in Chichiriviche, Falcón state, to establish, with the advice of FUDENA, an artisanal oyster farm. This will allow them to obtain oysters year-round, including during the closed season, thus reducing the impact of mangrove logging. Oyster farmers will be trained in oyster farm management and best marketing practices. The expected outcomes are: 1. Oyster farmers with knowledge of oyster farm management and business plans for oyster marketing; 2. A civil association of oyster farmers formed and legalized; 3. Production of mangrove oysters through artisanal farming; 4. Women in the oyster farming family group with better practices in the preparation of their marinated and preserved products; 5. Improved income for oyster farmers and their families through increased oyster sales; and 6. Recovery of natural oyster populations and mangrove roots. Project Number:VEN/SGP/OP7/Y4/STAR/BD/2023/01 |
