Covenant of Mayors phase III |
| Project Detail |
Urbanization in developing countries is one of the most significant challenges for the coming decades. The urban population of the African continent, currently estimated at 490 million, is expected to triple to nearly 1.5 billion by 2050. The provision of sustainable energy services in growing cities will not be possible without appropriate land and urban planning processes and better use of local renewable energy sources. The Covenant of Mayors Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM-SSA) is a European Union-funded initiative aimed at supporting cities and regional authorities in implementing climate and sustainable energy strategies and planning and preparing concrete investments. After two phases of calls for projects, the EU approached GIZ, AECID, and AFD (joined by Expertise France as part of the merger) to implement this third phase of the program (CoMSSA III). This new phase aims to scale up the achievements of the first two phases and to implement concrete investments. Participation in this program will support AFD in preparing its contribution to the 2020 Africa-France Summit on Sustainable Cities. |
