Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition. The coal phase-out in developing and emerging countries poses significant economic and social challenges, threating jobs, local livelihoods, and regional economies. As these regions shift away from coal, many communities face difficulties in adapting to new economic realities, which can exacerbate social inequalities and leave vulnerable groups, especially women, further behind. A just energy transition is essential to ensure that workers, communities, and employers can cope with these changes. However, existing social inequalities, along with structural and cultural barriers, hinder the ability of affected groups to participate in new economic opportunities. Addressing these barriers is crucial to creating decent jobs, reducing social disparities, and fostering inclusive economic growth. Objective Relevant stakeholders in coal-dependent regions of developing and emerging economies have collaboratively planned and implemented pathways for a just energy transition. These efforts align with the Paris Agreement and the International Labour Organization (ILO) Just Transition Guidelines, aiming to move away from coal towards low-carbon energy systems. |
