Project Detail |
Agriculture and livestock farming (agriculture and livestock raising) in Mongolia is the countrys main industry, second only to mining. However, in recent years, the Mongolian grasslands have been affected by unfavorable weather due to global warming, and due to the transition to a market economy and livestock privatization since 1992, the number of livestock kept has decreased from 20 million to 6,000 over the past 25 years. The number has rapidly increased to 1,000,000. As a result, overcrowding of livestock, known as overgrazing, has become the norm, causing great damage to plant communities in the Mongolian grasslands. In particular, shortages of pasture during the bitterly cold winter months have become more frequent in recent years, with many livestock starving to death and an increasing number of nomads being forced to abandon their nomadic lifestyle. This cooperation aims to quickly clarify the genetic, physiological, and pharmacological aspects of useful native grassland plants that have traditionally been used as livestock feed among nomads, and to develop and disseminate established cultivation techniques. We aim to improve the functionality of grasslands with mature plants and functional plants, contributing to the recovery of degraded grasslands and preserving the health of livestock. |
