The development of objective of the Integrated Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Chemical Hotspots Management Project for Iraq is to improve the management and safe disposal of POPs and hazardous chemicals in Iraq. The project comprises of four components. The first component, improve the management of POPs and hazardous chemicals consists of following sub-components: (i) updating national implementation plan for POPs; (ii) policy, regulatory, and institutional strengthening for POPs management; and (iii) capacity building for POPs management. The second component, management and disposal of high-risk priority POPs in agriculture and power sectors consists of following sub-components: (i) management and disposal of obsolete pesticides (OPs) in the agriculture sector; and (ii) management and disposal of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the power sector. The third component, management of chemical pollution hotspots supports activities for the management of these sites with financing from Iraq Reform Recovery Reconstruction Fund (I3RF). The fourth component, project management, and monitoring and evaluation will support: (a) the establishment and operation of the Project Management Unit (PMU) at the Ministry of Environment and related activities conducted by Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and Ministry of Electricity (MoElec); and (ii) the preparation and implementation of monitoring and evaluation activities of the Project, collecting evidence-based information and data and reporting in compliance to the World Bank and Global Environment Facility (GEF) guidelines.Improve the management and safe disposal of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and hazardous chemicals in Iraq. |
