Project Detail |
This activity’s goal is to reduce waste in municipalities leading to cleaner oceans in the Dominican Republic. To achieve clean oceans, USAID will work on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic enabling communities and economies to thrive and to build resilience to climate and economic shocks. The Dominican Republic, one of the highest plastic waste generators in the Caribbean, lacks basic systems for municipal waste collection and disposal and has very low rates of recycling. As a result, up to 90 percent of plastic waste is at risk of entering waterways and reaching the ocean. Plastic is the most persistent and harmful solid pollutant in marine ecosystems, disrupting critical biogeochemical cycles. |
