Brazil Project Notice - Coupling Sectors In Brazil To Promote A Green Economy

Project Notice

PNR 66963
Project Name Coupling sectors in Brazil to promote a green economy
Project Detail Sector Coupling and Green Economy in Brazil Urban transport and industrial processes in Brazil currently account for 65% of all energy consumption in the country. However, transport consumed only 21.5% and industry 62% of all renewable energy generated in the country in 2022. This is despite Brazil having one of the largest shares of renewable energy in the world. Therefore, combining these consumption segments with the renewable electricity generation segment offers enormous decarbonization potential for Brazil and can transform it into one of the greenest and most competitive economies in the world. Brazilian urban transport and industry are more climate neutral, environmentally friendly and socially fair. Approach The project develops solutions for the electrification of urban transport as well as the electrification of Brazilian industry. It cooperates with relevant transport industry players to demonstrate the benefits of climate-sensitive mobility solutions in three areas: public passenger transport, urban cleaning and urban logistics. For example, the project provides advice on the development of digital tools and innovations and on how to develop business models to improve the economic viability of urban public transport. It also cooperates with relevant industry players to demonstrate the advantages of replacing fossil fuels with electricity in industrial processes. Among other things, the project also provides advice on identifying the most suitable industrial segments and processes for implementing the project objectives and on testing electrification concepts in selected industries, for example using heat pumps. All project activities are coordinated in partnership with the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
