Present City – Sustainable Urban Development (SUD)
The world is changing and cities are at the center of this process. In Brazil, 85% of the population lives in urban areas and, by 2050, this number could reach 91%. The Brazilian urban reality goes beyond geographic and climatic diversity – its territories are characterized by considerable socioeconomic and spatial inequalities.
The lack of integration in cities has a direct impact on urban mobility, housing, basic sanitation, culture, leisure, green areas and essential services, the provision of which can differ significantly between neighborhoods. This means that the impacts of climate change affect cities at different levels. Therefore, the historical social inequalities found in Brazil are reflected in the effects of climate change.
The Cidade Presente — Sustainable Urban Development (DUS) Project addresses the challenge of implementing technical cooperation to support and promote integrated urban development with a focus on citizens. This should involve the provision of services, national, state and municipal actors and territories, in order to enable inclusive, resilient, prosperous and climate-sensitive urbanization.
Aim
Improve implementation conditions for integrated, inclusive and climate-resilient urban development in Brazil.
Approach
The Cidade Presente Project will select six pilot municipalities and support them in the implementation of their demonstration projects aimed at integrated, inclusive and climate-resilient urban development. In addition, it will enhance national support and financing instruments, together with the Ministry of Cities (MCID), to encourage cooperation between different regions, government institutions and all levels of government. It will also contribute to expanding the technical competence of professionals directly involved so that national policies and local governments can benefit. |
