Project Name Living Territories II
Project Detail Agenda 2030 – contribution to the "leave no one behind" principle II In Brazil, there are 28 segments of Traditional Peoples and Communities (TCPs) recognized by law. Due to their traditional way of life and their deep knowledge of ecological connections, TCs are considered the best guardians of the forest, the environment and biodiversity. On the other hand, these peoples experience difficulties in obtaining land recognition for their territories and recurring threats and violations of environmental and human rights. The lack of reliable data addressing the occupation of traditional territories, the cultural aspects of PCTs and their contribution to climate maintenance are some of the reasons why the Brazilian State has difficulty mitigating rights violations and meeting the rights demands of traditional peoples and communities. Promoting the use of the "National Territories Platform", developed since 2018 by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and the National Council of Traditional Peoples and Communities (CNPCT), is crucial for the tool to be effective in protecting PCTs in their territories. Aim The human and environmental rights of traditional peoples and communities in their territories are protected through the use of the Traditional Territories Platform and other digital tools. Approach The project is being implemented in Brasília, the national headquarters of the MPF, and in four pilot regions: Mato Grosso, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and Amazonas. It develops innovative digital solutions for cross-referencing georeferenced data and automated analyses of the Traditional Territories Platform (PTT), so that the tool can be used by the MPF and other public agencies in the defense of traditional territories. The project also builds the capacities of the PTTs multi-stakeholder governance to multiply knowledge and to ensure the effective functioning of the registration processes. In addition, it will offer training in the safe use of PTT information, data and tools so that Traditional Peoples and communities can better monitor their territories. Organizations, leaders and representatives of PCTs receive digital training and support to use the PTT and to work in a strategic network. The design and implementation of the project follow the principle "Leave no one behind", enshrined in the 2030 Agenda. All project activities apply a gender-sensitive approach, and include actions aimed at youth.
