Various Countries Project Notice - Protection Of Pollinating Insects In Latin America And The Caribbean

Project Notice

PNR 66953
Project Name Protection of pollinating insects in Latin America and the Caribbean
Project Detail Regional action to improve the protection of pollinating insects and pollination services in Latin America and the Caribbean (PoliLAC) Insect pollination is crucial for plant reproduction, healthy ecosystems and biodiversity. Moreover, 75% of the worlds food depends on it. However, pollinating insects such as bees are at risk from habitat loss, pesticide use, disease, and climate change, among other threats. Therefore, efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean need to be redoubled to halt the decline of pollinators and ensure that they continue to provide benefits for local livelihoods, food, and adaptation to climate change. Governmental and non-governmental actors in Latin America and the Caribbean are expanding their knowledge-based management practices and enhancing their cooperation to better manage the protection of pollinating insects and their ecosystem services. Procedure The project involves decision-makers (e.g. businesses and farmers) in knowledge management in the region on pollinating insects, their protection and sustainable management. A regional knowledge platform makes data, information and training available, and encourages practical and scientific exchange. Together with public and private decision-makers, such as ministries of environment and agriculture, non-governmental organizations and environmental funds, the project develops policies and instruments to conserve pollinating insects and ensure their sustainable use, as well as to mobilize financial resources, always taking into account the gender perspective. The project advises local farmers in selected landscapes to adopt pollinator-friendly practices, and also cooperates with universities and research institutes to monitor the number and diversity of pollinating insects. The practices aim to reduce or eliminate threats to pollinating insects.
