Project Notice

Project Name Best Practices Workshop on Development, Review and Implementation of Plans of Action to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU Fishing
Project Detail Project No. OFWG_207_2024A Project Status Project in Implementation The APEC region provides approximately 52% of global fisheries catch: USD144 billion annually. Since estimations show 20% of global fish captures lost to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, preventing it is a top priority. In 2001, the FAO adopted the International Plan of Action to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing (IPOA-IUU), calling for adoption of economy-wide Plans of Action (POAs-IUU), to be revised every four years. Over half of APEC economies have developed POAs, and a Regional Plan of Action exists for 9 East Asian economies; Most plans remain to be updated considering that the nature of IUU fishing and the tools to combat it have significantly evolved. This project will develop collaboration, information sharing and capacity building on development, review and implementation of existing POAs or new plans, to tackle IUU Fishing. A questionnaire will collect data and a workshop will identify key elements to underscore the POAs-IUU opportunities of development.
