Combating illegal excavations at archaeological sites
Illegal excavations within the EMMENA Region pose a significant threat to cultural heritage. In this context, the EU-funded REVITALISER project aims to enhance the capabilities of the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence (ECoE) in Cyprus. The goal is to protect these sites from illicit excavations and looting activities. Through strategic networking activities with three international institutions, the project aims to strengthen ECoE’s excellence in Earth Observation and Cultural Property Protection (CPP). This effort will help bridge the research and innovation gap between Cyprus and Europe, particularly in addressing archaeological looting. Ultimately, REVITALISER aims for ECoE to emerge as a leading institution in the protection of archaeological sites, focusing on combating cultural property crimes in the EMMENA region and safeguarding cultural heritage for future generations. |
