Chad Project Notice - Promoting Culture, Preventing Crises

Project Notice

PNR 66249
Project Name Promoting culture, preventing crises
Project Detail Crisis prevention through the promotion of the cultural sector in Chad. Chad is currently undergoing a phase of political change. Historically, there have been internal conflicts and struggles that go beyond the neighbouring countries, which are jeopardising the country’s stability. However, there is limited scope for civil society to deal with the situation constructively. Young people are particularly susceptible to attempts at political exploitation in this context – above all because they lack the anchor points to identify positively with the countrys cultural diversity. An understanding of cultures is crucial in order to understand other values, beliefs and customs and thus prevent crises in Chad. Objective The cultural participation of young people and civil society living in and around the capital NDjamena and in other urban centres has increased. Approach The project works in three areas with a particular focus on women: 1. Promoting cultural centres in NDjamena It provides local centres with equipment such as stage technology to establish themselves as meeting places for young people and civil society. At the same time, it trains managers and staff at the centres and supports them in anchoring the facilities in the long term. 2. Supporting cultural events and art in NDjamena The project provides technical and financial support to cultural initiatives that foster the quality and quantity of art related to socially relevant topics. It organises calls for proposals and appoints a jury of cultural experts, representatives of civil society and the media to select the initiatives. 3. Expanding access to culture The project supports traditional media and digital platforms in boosting reporting on Chads cultural offerings. It also trains young people to become more aware when using digital technologies and social networks. At the same time, it develops inclusive programmes that make cultural offerings and spaces accessible to a wide audience.
