Project Name PROPOSALFORAGRANTFORHUMANITARIAN ANDFOOD SECURITY RESPONSE TO MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF FLOODS
Project Detail Providing food relief to the most vulnerable.2.1.1At least 4.8 million people were acutely food insecure at the peak of the 2024 lean season before the flood (CH, March 2024). With some marginal (maximum 25 percent) food security recovery at the end of the lean season in October, prior to completion of seasonal harvesting, this was expected to reduce to 3.3 million people. Acutely food insecure people needing urgent assistance from mid-September to end of October 2024 across the Borno, Yobe and Adamawa (BAY) states was approximately 5 million people.2.1.2Flood impact assessment on land cover and cropland was done in September 2024 by FAO. In Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States, the most affected land class is croplands (70,500 ha), followed by tree-covered areas (21,800 ha). Over 93,826 hectares of crops across the States have been destroyed. Given an average yield of 1.5 metric tons per hectare, this adds up to an estimated 140,739 metric tons of food loss. The extent of food loss due to the flood is equivalent to an amount of food which could feed 1.4 millionpeople for 6 months.2.1.3The appeal is based on aholistic approach to flood responseandensures access to energy, improves nutrition, and supports livelihoods while promoting sustainability, gender equality and local capacities.
