Improving effective seabird by-catch prevention measures in Europe
As fisheries expand to meet market demands, interactions between seabirds and vessels increase, providing scavenging opportunities but also raising the risk of by-catch. This contributes to the rapid decline of seabird populations, with by-catch in fishing gear identified as a leading cause. Supported by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme, the BioPSy project will address seabird by-catch prevention in New Zealand and apply the developed skills to European regions with severe seabird by-catch issues. The project will use advanced analyses on seabird bio-logging data to create effective seabird by-catch prevention measures (SBPMs). Stakeholder engagement will be central to the project’s experimental design, and recommendations for improving SBPMs will be communicated to key stakeholders. |
