Project Notice

PNR 65628
Project Name IDBIO PROJECT - AN ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIP TO PROMOTE RENEWABLE RESOURCES AND WASTE INTO BIO-SOURCED PRODUCTS
Project Detail Better use of renewable resources and waste in bio-sourced products is the goal set by the IDBIO project, winner of the second edition of the "Africa - France Academic Partnerships" program. Led by Gaston Berger University in Saint Louis, Senegal and the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) in Toulouse, it aims to structure a professional training program from bachelors to doctorate, promote sustainable innovation, and foster employment and equity. CONTEXT The socio-economic situation of many African countries is marked by a strong energy dependence on fossil resources and the use of biomass/wood. This generates a risk of deforestation and reduction of biodiversity, limited food production and post-harvest losses, a low level of treatment and recycling of waste with the consequences of worrying pollution. The (bio)transformation of biomasses, which includes all renewable resources, residues of agricultural, industrial food and non-food, forestry, aquaculture origins, is promising for the socio-economic development of the country while respecting environmental issues. Indeed, there are many applications in vital sectors of the economy such as the environment, food, alternative energies to fossil fuels, chemistry, health, bio-sourced materials, sectors that create added value and local employment. DESCRIPTION The IDBIO project aims to structure a strategic partnership for the creation of higher education courses within 6 African universities, on the sustainable engineering of bio-based products: a Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate course, professionalizing, of quality and attractive at the national, regional and international level. Its ambition? To work towards the emergence of new sectors for the valorization of bio-based products, renewable resources and waste, in support of the local and sustainable economy. The PEA IDBIO and the Avenir Afrique Foundation work to promote and support the actions of the UNESCO IDBIO Chair created in January 2023. This project was selected as part of the second edition of the “Africa-France Academic Partnerships” program. This program is funded by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) via the French Development Agency (AFD). It is implemented by the National Research Agency (ANR) and Campus France with the support of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR). IMPACTS This project contributes to the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Eradicating poverty and combating inequality in all its forms (SDG 1) ; The co-construction of quality and professional training courses on the African continent (SDG 4) ; Access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy services (SDG 7) ; The establishment of sustainable consumption and production patterns (SDG 12) .
