Project Detail |
The Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation (TLPF) uses athletics as a lever to promote peace, strengthen social cohesion and foster development in areas affected by conflict. AFD supports the development of the association through its “Academies” program.
CONTEXT
Kapenguria, a town nestled in West Pokot County in Kenya, faces a multitude of challenges that have profoundly impacted the daily lives of its residents. One of the central issues in the region concerns intercommunal conflicts triggered by competition for resources, particularly water and pasture, between the various ethnic groups. These tensions have led to human losses, massive population displacements and significant material damage. A climate of mistrust has now set in, exacerbated by socio-economic precarity and the impact of climate change. In this context, the promotion of sports is emerging as a relevant solution to foster peaceful coexistence and alleviate friction between the different communities.
DESCRIPTION
The Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation (TLPF) provides education and sports training to underprivileged children, refugees and orphans from conflict zones in East Africa. Through this approach, the academy aims to empower youth by providing them with the skills and resources needed to succeed.
The academys action is based on four fundamental objectives:
Facilitate access to sports facilities and equipment for young people living in conflict zones.
Organize events and sports programs that promote meetings between young people from different communities, with the aim of promoting peace and unity.
Provide education and training to young people in conflict zones to develop their skills and opportunities.
To raise awareness of the impact of conflict on communities and encourage peacebuilding and conflict resolution through sport.
IMPACTS
Strengthen the skills of coaches, educators and teachers to better support young athletes in their future careers;
Raise awareness of issues of youth protection, gender equality and girls rights to promote access to equitable educational opportunities and encourage increased participation of girls in the field of sport;
Mobilize the community around the promotion of peace, environmental preservation and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. |
