France Project Notice - ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE BIODIVERSITY OF THE GUADELOUPE ISLANDS

Project Notice

PNR 65484
Project Name ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE BIODIVERSITY OF THE GUADELOUPE ISLANDS
Project Detail The Regional Biodiversity Agency of the Islands of Guadeloupe and the National Museum of Natural History are jointly leading a project called "The Revisited Planet of the Islands of Guadeloupe" which aims to acquire scientific data on biodiversity. CONTEXT The Regional Agency for Biodiversity of the Islands of Guadeloupe (ARB-IG) was born from a partnership between the Guadeloupe Region (biodiversity leader), the OFB (French Office for Biodiversity) and the State (represented by DEAL). This public environmental cooperation establishment, created on February 11, 2021, is an operational structure aimed at the preservation and restoration of biodiversity. The ARB-IGs areas of intervention are multiple: training, public awareness, technical and financial support for biodiversity stakeholders (communities, associations, businesses) but also the improvement and provision of knowledge on biodiversity, a component of this revisited planet project. DESCRIPTION The "Revisited Planet of the Guadeloupe Islands" project - 2024 is a project to acquire knowledge on the "neglected" biodiversity on the southern islands of Désirade, Marie-Galante and Les Saintes. This project will take place as part of a scientific expedition that will be divided into 2 parts: a land component and a marine component for which approximately 60 local, national and international researchers will be mobilized for more than 45 days, in the last quarter of 2024. During the two previous editions, called "Karubenthos 1 (2012) & 2 (2015)", which focused on the marine aspect, nearly 250 new species were discovered by scientists, including 84 species endemic to Guadeloupe. In order to continue acquiring knowledge on the biodiversity of the Guadeloupe archipelago and to complete the benthic environment inventories of 2015, the ARB-IG wishes to implement this 3rd part of oceanographic exploration of biodiversity, "Karubenthos 3" in the southern islands. The AFD is involved by partially financing this project: the ARB-IG signed a partnership agreement with the AFD in October 2023 providing a financial contribution of €80,000 to the project, which is perfectly in line with the AFDs objectives and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for biodiversity, climate and education.
