Operationalizing Best Practices to Reduce Ghost Gear in the APEC Region
Project Status
Project in Implementation
Fund Account
Self-Funded
Project Year
2024
The Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) will convene two virtual capacity building workshops to provide training and foster knowledge-sharing on the implementation of best practices for managing ALDFG, including increasing the use of effective gear-marking strategies as part of an integrated gear-loss reporting system. The workshops will bring together relevant stakeholders across APEC economies, fostering collaboration in order to ensure the effectiveness and success of the implementation of best practices and relevant gear-marking. GGGI will also conduct an ALDFG impact analysis to better understand the effects of different gear types discarded in the ocean, particularly on aquatic life. GGGI will conduct an analysis and develop a rubric to standardize ALDFG metrics. Together with the forthcoming animal impact calculator being developed by GGGI and Ocean Conservancy, this tool will allow comparative analyses between disparate datasets in order to gain a greater understanding of the global impacts of ALDFG on biodiversity around the world. |
