The Global Quality and Standards Programme is a strategic partnership between Switzerland and UNIDO to promote trade and competitiveness through strengthening the quality and standards compliance capacity to facilitate markets for SMEs in eight priority countries. The project in Vietnam Phase 1 focused on “Increasing quality and standards compliance capacity of Mango value chain in Mekong River Delta” and achieved significant outcomes.Development of the tropical fruit industry has potential to bring significant economic benefits to regional communities. Phase 2 proposes expanding the learnings to a wider tropical fruit industry following logical progression. This will be integration of previous work such as:• Traceability, testing along with new technology into the commercial demonstration chains.• Upscaling by adapting SOPs across a wider number of crops, building new demonstration chains and expanding the technology transfer.• Building sustainability through a market driven approach for commercial viability, reduced losses, product diversification, value adding options, reduction of wastage, adaptive change, efficiencies and environmental responsibility.• Creating a culture of quality that brings industry and government, to align needs and recruitments create a greater strategic approach to the development of the tropical fruit industry.This will enable the Vietnamese tropical fruit industries to have the ability to meet the export market requirements and capitalise on the opportunities that exist, which in turn will improve the economic viability of the industry. |
