Solomon Islands Project Notice - Solomon Islands Knowledge-Action-Sustainability For Resilient Villages (SOLKAS) Project

Project Notice

PNR 64772
Project Name Solomon Islands Knowledge-Action-Sustainability for Resilient Villages (SOLKAS) Project
Project Detail Rise in sea level and temperature, extreme rainfall, flooding, and droughts threaten the Solomon Islands’ population who reside on low-lying islands and atolls. The local population remains highly reliant on dwindling natural resources which is already leading to reduced labor productivity, stress on freshwater and food supplies, and causing severe degradation of the islands’ distinct ecosystems. The SOLKAS project will strengthen the resilience of targeted communities and rural youth on the Solomon Islands against the onslaught of climate change impacts. It will enhance the adaptation capacities of the islands’ government and schools to lay the foundation for a locally led adaptation effort through investments in critical community and school infrastructures. Building upon a community-based adaptation approach, the project will also advance understanding of the climate crisis on the island by delivering two highly innovative initiatives: a digital toolset for climate risk assessment and adaptation planning and a permanent Youth Climate Resilience Livelihoods incubator to accelerate green projects locally.
