United States Project Notice - A Novel Class Of High-Energy/Power-Density, Long-Cycle-Life, Roll-To-Roll-Processed Solid-State Lithium-Air Batteries (SSLAB) For Aircraft Applications

Project Notice

PNR 64421
Project Name A Novel Class of High-energy/power-density, Long-cycle-life, Roll-to-roll-processed Solid-state Lithium-Air Batteries (SSLAB) for Aircraft Applications
Project Detail Solid Energies will develop a new generation of safe, high power, energy dense, and long-lasting solid-state Lithium-air batteries (SSLaBs). Based on a new class of polymer composite electrolytes that are compatible with today’s Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery production lines, these SSLaBs could provide superior safety, extremely high energy and power densities (1000 WHr/kg and 1500 W/kg respectively, four times of existing Li-ion batteries), and last over 1000 charge and discharge cycles. The technology relies on advances in polymer composite solid-state electrolytes, a novel cell structure design, and a highly efficient manufacturing process. Market Impact Potential: Solid Energies hopes to leverage their advances in solid-state electrolyte optimization and cell processing optimization to progress quickly toward the establishment of a pilot-scale line for their SSLaBs, which could be used in a variety of transportation applications including regional jet aircraft. If successful, Solid Energies’ SSLaBs could have a significant impact on the U.S. battery industry and electrification of the U.S. transportation sector.
