Project Detail |
The main objective of the study program proposed by the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) is to acquire the necessary hydrogeological knowledge and data through proven scientific approaches and efficient methods never before implemented in Rodrigues, in order to use them in the operational management of the islands groundwater.
CONTEXT
For several years, a recurring tension on water distribution has been observed in Rodrigues, and this is exacerbated during the dry season. This problem will increase with climate change (more pronounced dry season), the foreseeable increase in the population and the tourist development of the island.
Currently, groundwater extraction by drilling contributes 30-40% of the total exploited resource. Groundwater offers the following advantages:
Much better natural protection against various types of pollution compared to surface water;
A more sustainable and much more ecological operation, with a lower energy cost than desalination;
A location partly in high areas, allowing their distribution by gravity;
An inertia allowing them to be exploited in the absence of precipitation during the dry season. |
