Food crisis has affected Burkina Faso with millions of people food insecure and hundreds of households vulnerable. This is compounded by refugees’ influx, mounting conflict, and devastating climate impacts. Food reserves are critical means to improve food access and availability for those most at risk in Burkina Faso. However, quality and safety bottlenecks and effective management of the supply chain have undermined the purpose of food reserves. Under the WFP-UNIDO MoU and its subsequent Global Programming Framework (GSP) and action plan, WFP and UNIDO will collaborate to strengthen Burkina Faso National Society for Food Stock Management (SONAGESS)’s capacity in food safety and quality assurance (FSQA) and supply chain management.The overall goal of the project is strengthen Burkina Faso food reserve agencies’ supply chain management, and, food safety and quality assurance ecosystem to ensure access and stability of safe food. The specific objective is to provide technical assistance to strengthen SONAGESS’s capacity at the central and decentralized levels in supply chain including logistics, food handling storage, quality assurance and accounting. The technical support package will comprise capacity building through staff training, coaching and provision of material support. With the aim to improve knowledge of food safety and quality assurance, 30 staff from SONAGESS/CONASUR will benefit directly from this high impact training that will be conducted in Ouagadougou as well as in the regions.The intervention areas include stock handling and management at extended delivery points, food quality control and inspection, laboratory equipment for food testing, bagging, warehouse storage management, solar panels for improved energy access and security, commodity accounting and fumigation. Equipment will be provided to SONAGESS to reinforce the internal laboratory of SONAGESS /CONASUR for food quality testing and quality control. |
