Project Detail |
This project will help Benin prepare an inventory and plan to manage old refrigerant gases that harm the ozone layer and climate. Benin signed the Montreal Protocol agreement to phase out these gases called ozone depleting substances (ODS). As equipment like fridges and AC units get replaced, the old ODS refrigerant that was inside them needs proper management. If released, it will damage the ozone layer and increase global warming. The project will first estimate how much old ODS is currently present in Benin. This includes ODS stored in cylinders or still inside old equipment. Next, the project will bring together the government, companies and technicians to discuss the best ways to collect and dispose of the ODS without releasing it. They will make a plan with steps Benin can take like creating facilities, training technicians, recycling ODS, safely destroying ODS, etc. The plan will help Benin set up systems to manage ODS waste properly when replacing more equipment in the future under the Montreal Protocol. Managing the old ODS will protect the ozone layer and avoid increasing global warming. The project will be implemented in 24 months by UNIDO. Funding of $90,000 is requested from the Multilateral Fund which supports developing countries under the Montreal Protocol. |
