Project Notice

PNR 62537
Project Name Landscape Study and Benchmarking Workshop for APEC Open Science Alliance
Project Detail Knowledge acquired and communicated in the digital environment have always been powerful drivers for scientific and societal progress. A new paradigm of “open science” is being adopted by many economies to remove barriers to the sharing of knowledge, implemented through the creation of disciplinary or virtual networks supported by international organizations such as UNESCO that is actively progressing in the implementation of the Open Science Recommendation adopted on November 23, 2021 and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) that strives to connect research through open science practices and policies across European economies. The idea of establishing an “APEC Open Science Alliance” was mooted in 2023 at APEC PPSTI which will allow regional integration for APEC economies to share knowledge in a responsible and ethical manner in accordance to the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability (FAIR) principle for Open Science implementation. The idea is in line with the APEC PPSTI Statement on Open Science endorsed in 2020, that calls on APEC Economies to support open science with the aim to make data-intensive science as a fundamental resource promoting science-based evidence in the promulgation of domestic policies, and to advocate for open science in fostering sustainable, innovative, and inclusive growth. The workshop will be conducted to map the existing landscape of data policies, research networks, current open science platforms and identify the best practices within the APEC region. Strategic partners include APEC Economies, APRU, ISC Committee on Data, and journal publishers.
