Project Detail |
In Mongolia, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) constitute a priority public health problem. This is what prompted the Luxembourg government to help the Mongolian government fight against CVD since 2001.
The MON/007 project is the 5th phase of the intervention after the MON/002, MON/003, MON/005 and MON/006 projects. The support began with strengthening the referral system of cardiovascular and cardiological services, both at the provincial and central levels, to adequately treat referred patients and reduce undue and costly medical referral services.
Compared to previous phases of the project, the MON/007 project will focus more on supporting the national action plan for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. With a focus on prevention, the project targets some of the many determinants of CVD, such as lifestyle factors (e.g. diet, smoking, alcohol abuse). Additionally, South-South cooperation between Mongolia and the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic will be encouraged to leverage Mongolias considerable experience in telemedicine and interventional cardiology.
The project aims to reduce the case/mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases of different etiologies (hypertension, coronary heart disease, valve problems following streptococcal infections and coronary heart disease). This project is part of Mongolias Sustainable Development Vision 2030, whose Goal 3 states: "Reduce major non-communicable diseases, health risk factors and preventable deaths through active partnership and inclusive between individuals, families, communities and organizations.
Strengthening the National Cardiology Center (NCC) was considered the best option to ensure the sustainability of the activities implemented by previous projects.
The support will be structured around four result areas:
result 1: the national CVD prevention strategy is supported by the project with specific activities;
result 2: the surgical capacity and integrated cardiac care of the NCC are further strengthened;
outcome 3: cardiovascular health services are further strengthened at all levels of the national health care pyramid;
result 4: the NCC is strengthened and institutionalized.
This project will continue to cover all 21 provinces and nine districts in the Ulaanbaatar urban area.
Continuing from the previous phases of this intervention, the primary (direct) beneficiaries of the project are all hospitals involved in the project nationwide and all NCC staff, while the secondary (final) beneficiaries are patients affected by CVD and the entire Mongolian population, thanks to the improvement of the NCC and all cardiovascular services across the country. |
