Project Detail |
The African Union uses innovative instruments and participatory approaches for development- and employment-oriented planning and preparation of regional infrastructure projects.
To achieve inclusive socio-economic growth, sub-Saharan Africa must overcome a number of challenges. Only 43 percent of the continents population has access to electricity, less than 24 percent are connected to the internet and only 25 percent of roads are paved. Climate change is leading to more frequent and severe extreme weather events, creating further challenges. The poorest population is affected and the impact on human capital and trade is long-lasting. Africa produces only 7.6 percent of the greenhouse gases emitted worldwide. Nevertheless, the continent and its infrastructure will be adversely affected if climate change adaptation and mitigation measures are not included in infrastructure development. Climate shocks such as natural disasters and changing weather conditions damage existing infrastructure. This has a negative impact on economic production in individual countries.
Goal
Through advisory services, the African Union improves the expertise required for climate-resilient, low-carbon infrastructure projects and promotes cross-border trade. |
