Spain Project Notice - Investigation Into Reasons For Drinking Among Adolescents And Young Adults: A Gender Perspective.

Project Notice

PNR 59891
Project Name Investigation into reasons for drinking among adolescents and young adults: a gender perspective.
Project Detail Gender-specific prevention in alcohol consumption among young people In Europe, alcohol consumption among adolescents has been a growing concern, particularly among girls. What was once a gender disparity in drinking habits has now shifted, with girls matching or even surpassing boys in some contexts. This emerging trend in Europe calls for global attention and understanding to develop effective prevention strategies. Existing programmes lack focus on specific gender situations and mechanisms involved in this behavioural change. With the support of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions programme, the OH-GENDER project seeks to revolutionise the study of alcohol consumption with its innovative quantitative assessment tool and advance a new model for its determinants through the statistical analysis technique structural equation modelling. OH-GENDER aims to fill the knowledge gap and pave the way for gender-specific prevention programmes. In Europe, 53.5% of adolescents consume alcohol in excess, but what has attracted attention is the increase in consumption among girls. These used to drink less than boys, but now their consumption is equal and on some contexts larger than boys. How this happens in Europe, where it can be considered a trendsetter, should be a global concern. Thus, understanding the reasons for this behavior change is essential to develop prevention program strategies that are effective in young people. Existing programs are not successful, they do not focus on specific gender situations and also on the mechanisms involved in this process. In addition, studies to date do not have a quantitative assessment, as there are no instruments to unravel the reasons for alcohol consumption from the perspective of gender difference. Current studies have only a qualitative assessment, it is impossible to compare groups of people and populations, making a global view of this field unfeasible. Thus the proposal will unravel the determinants of alcohol consumption in adolescents and young adults from a gender perspective. This will be a paradigm shift in the knowledge of alcohol consumption. OH-GENDER is highly original and innovative as it provides a new instrument for quantitative assessment and will deliver a new model of consumption of alcohol determinants by an advanced technique of statistical analysis (Structural Equation Model) advancing the field of gender disparity. a tool to identify the different needs between girls and boys, disclosing the determinants of alcohol consumption from a gender perspective will be an advance in the state of the art, filling this unexplored knowledge gap. The proposal will advance in the field of alcohol consumption prevention and has the potential to be an ongoing study after PF.
