Renovation and repurpose of an existing facility
Stantec provided engineering, scheduling, and procurement services for the construction of a new omega-3 oil micro-encapsulation plant housed in a refurbished former cheese plant.
When Ocean Nutrition, a marine-based natural health and nutrition products provider, wanted to save costs and bring their omega-3 oil micro-encapsulation plant online faster, they brought us in to cover engineering, scheduling, and procurement services at this former cheese plant.
We worked with Ocean Nutrition to complete scale-up process design, including process and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) development, design philosophies, and process narratives. We advised them on required building renovations, including structural, electrical, and mechanical systems, and we contributed project scheduling and tracking, tender package preparation, and bid evaluations.
A key design decision? Modeling the process piping and equipment in 3D using Intergraph’s PDS modeling software. This enabled the creation of a virtual plant, making client reviews more accessible and supporting the production of piping isometric drawings for mechanical bid packages. In addition to the process itself, our team engineered the utility systems including de-ionized water, glycol, and refrigeration. We also provided follow-on engineering support during construction and commissioning.
With all of this in place, Ocean Nutrition was better prepared to launch their processing facility. |
