Increasing oil flow from Northern Alberta
Improving efficiency and increasing capacity for Inter Pipeline Ltd..
Inter Pipeline Ltd.’s (IPL) oil production in Northeast Alberta is increasing, and additional pumping capacity is needed on their Cold Lake to Edmonton pipeline. Improvements to the existing stations and two new pump stations, each approximately one quarter of the way along the line, will increase the volume of crude by 100,000 barrels to 318,000 per day.
IPL chose us for this project after a positive experience designing pumping and receiving stations on the Polaris Expansion project. The two new pump stations—located in Ashmont and Beaverhill—proved challenging. Beaverhill is a fair sized lake surrounded by land with a high water table. We worked to overcome groundwater and soil conditions in the area. Careful design and planning was required to ensure the foundation was stable.
The three existing pump stations were also modified. A major change at the Bellis station greatly improved efficiency. Rather than use a single series of pumps with the other as stand by, we made adjustments so the two could operate simultaneously at this vital halfway point. |
