Mending a critical highway corridor for travelers and local communities through a collaborative contract delivery model
Restoring safe and reliable transportation infrastructure after a major flooding evet.
Highway 1 at the Falls Creek crossing was one of many locations through the Fraser Canyon damaged during the November 2021 atmospheric river event. The deep fill culvert and its embankment suffered a washout and were damaged beyond repair.
The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) opted to tackle this major rebuilding project through an alliance delivery model. MOTI engaged our team as the designer and BA Blacktop Infrastructure Inc., as the contractor to form the Falls Creek Alliance. This model allowed for a truly integrated team that could effectively collaborate and overcome the challenges of accelerated project schedules, a highly constrained site with hazardous environmental conditions, and design and construction of temporary and permanent structures.
Our role in the Alliance primarily involved the design of a new permanent bridge crossing with associated engineering services. We also led engagement activities with the 17 affected Indigenous groups to maximize inclusion for procurement, employment, and training opportunities.
Phase 1 of the project opened to two-lane traffic in December 2023, with project completion scheduled for summer 2024. |
