Project Notice

PNR 59009
Project Name Drinking water supply and sanitation program in semi-urban and rural areas (PAEPA SU MR 2)
Project Detail This project concerns the Semi-Urban and Rural Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Programme in Eleven Regions (PEAPA-SUMR– Phase 2). The programme aims to contribute to improving the well-being of people living in semi-urban and rural areas through greater access to drinking water and sanitation. By investing in the construction of social and rural infrastructure in areas affected by fragility, the programme will help to build resilient societies, reduce isolation, bridge gender inequalities, promote inclusive economic development and strengthen access to basic health services. The construction of drinking water and sanitation infrastructure will make it possible to: (i) improve the drinking water and sanitation access rates; (ii) reduce the distances travelled by women and girls in search of water; (iii) improve the population’s hygiene and health; and (iv) strengthen women’s economic power and water sector stakeholders’ technical skills. In addition, the programme will address key drivers of social fragility in the country, such as exposure to water-borne diseases, poor access to drinking water, inter-community conflicts (herders and farmers), unemployment among young people and women (particularly widows) and involuntary displacement. The construction of large-diameter agricultural boreholes equipped with solar pumps, lay-out of vegetable gardens for small-scale irrigation for womens groups, management of household waste along the entire value chain (collection, transport, sorting and recycling of plastic waste, etc.) to promote the circular economy and reuse of sludge for composting will help to create jobs and empower women economically. Project Objectives The programme’s overall objective is to help improve the living conditions of people in semi-urban and rural areas by providing access to drinking water and sanitation. Specifically, the programme aims to: (i) provide programme area communities with sustainable access to drinking water; (ii) strengthen access to sanitation services by increasing the coverage rate of public latrines in markets, bus stations, health centres and schools; (iii) strengthen women’s economic empowerment by creating development hubs around DWSS and household waste management infrastructure; and (iv) build the capacity of water sector players and beneficiary communities to better manage the facilities constructed.
