Italy Project Notice - Optimization Of Seismic Structural Health Monitoring Systems Based On Value Of Information Analysis

Project Notice

PNR 56158
Project Name Optimization of Seismic Structural Health Monitoring Systems Based on Value of Information Analysis
Project Detail Infrastructure systems such as bridges are one of the most crucial and integral parts of civilization and substantially affect a nations economic, social, and strategic solidity. Considering Europes aging infrastructure system, most of them exposed to seismic hazard, and the limited available resources, effective maintenance management solutions become a must to ensure their safe operation. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems can improve the relevant decisions by reducing the uncertainty associated with the capacity of the monitored structure and with the demand induced by seismic events. This project is directed toward the development of an advanced decision support tool for the optimal design of SHM systems aimed to support the integrity management of bridge networks in seismic-prone regions. This novel decision support tool will take the basis on the Value of Information (VoI) analysis. It will exploit information about the capacity of the structure gained through Structural Health Monitoring data and information about the seismic demand acquired through measurements and state-of-the-art ground-motion simulations. The project will advance the state of the art through the advancement of the framework for the quantification of the VoI from SHM for bridge networks in seismic regions. The Decision Support Tool will integrate advanced modeling of both the bridge capacity accounting for deterioration, and of the seismic demand through 3-D Physics-Based Simulation accounting for the complexities associated with the seismic source, propagation path, and site. The outputs of the research will contribute to European added value through high-quality research on the integrity management of bridge networks in seismic-prone regions, with the potential to contribute to the United Nation’s sustainable development goals.
