United States Project Notice - SR 302/Victor Creek - Remove Fish Barrier

Project Notice

PNR 55755
Project Name SR 302/Victor Creek - Remove Fish Barrier
Project Detail As part of WSDOTs major efforts to remove barriers to fish, this project addresses a barrier to fish under SR 302 near Victor Beginning spring 2024, crews working for WSDOT will build a temporary one-lane bypass road near the creek. This will keep people moving while the roadway is excavated. This will allow crews to remove the existing culvert. It will be replaced with a new 42-foot-long bridge over Victor Creek. The existing culvert at Victor Creek is a barrier to fish. The new bridge and reconstructed stream channel will provide unimpeded fish passage for several fish species of all life stages. Correcting fish passage barriers is an important part of the states efforts to protect and restore fish runs negatively affected by outdated culverts under state highways. A 2013 federal court injunction required WSDOT to significantly increase the state’s efforts in removing state-owned culverts that block habitat for salmon, bull trout, and steelhead. Replacing outdated culverts with either bridges or fish passable structures will increase the likelihood of fish migration. The improvements will slow water and build the creek to help simulate a more natural creek environment.
