Replacing aging and damaged bridges to provide safe and reliable transportation for the region
Bridges are critical links in the road network, often spanning waterways, drainage channels and gorges. Working with our client, the Tasman District Council, we provided a range of bridge project expertise to replace two bridges—the Mission Bridge on the Moutere Highway and Carter Access Bridge in Golden Bay.
Mission Bridge had become outdated, being too narrow and no longer suited for higher traffic volumes and heavier loads, while Carter Access Bridge was damaged by severe flooding after ex-tropical Cyclone Gita lashed the area.
How did we help? By providing concept design, surveys, geotechnical and hydrology investigations, traffic assessments, and guardrail design. We also supported our client by providing the estimating engineers role, tender documents, and construction monitoring. On the Mission Bridge project, our hydrology assessment showed we could develop a water catchment area with several irrigation dams. This catchment reduced the peak flow of the river and allowed a shorter bridge to be designed with significant cost-saving. The result? Fit-for-purpose and future-proofed structures that will keep communities connected and safe. |
