Providing road safety audit advice for a major tunnel connection on Auckland’s Western Ring Route
Improving Auckland’s transport network reliability and resilience through our role as safety auditors
Auckland’s Waterview Connection is a motorway tunnel that connects the southwestern to the northwestern motorway and completes the Western Ring Route around Auckland to avoid having to travel through the central business district. Our job? Road safety audits over the extended 11-year implementation of the project. The interchange at Great North Road in Waterview at the northern end of the tunnel was the major focus.
The audits contributed substantially to altering the design to adopt a six-lane cross-section for the motorway through the tunnel and to integrating solid lane lines and no shoulders to discourage lane changing and stopping in the tunnel. Of the many recommendations made by the team and adopted by the client, the most forward-thinking and inventive at the time were the overhead direction signs that can show variable speed limits by lane as well as different routes and destinations when the tunnel needs to be closed.
Providing audits throughout the project, which included local road connections and extensive walking and cycling facilities, contributed towards greater safety of the transport network. |
