United States Project Notice - 147-151 East 86Th Street Subway Improvements

Project Notice

PNR 55694
Project Name 147-151 East 86th Street Subway Improvements
Project Detail Improving accessibility at one of New York’s busy subway stations while also paving the way for new development Architecture and engineering for privately funded transit upgrades to address accessibility Our client acquired the property on the northeast corner of 86th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan with the goal of constructing an 18-story residential building with ground floor retail. The only thing standing in their way? The century-old building they needed to demolish had one of two existing 86th St Station entrances in its cellar. Removing this entrance was no simple task considering its importance to what was the 10th busiest station in the system at the time. This station was projected to see nearly 21 million annual riders during construction of the new building—this corner could not shut down. Stantec was hired to design upgrades to this subway station, which included two new stairs and a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) elevator to the platform. We developed a complex phasing plan that maintained the capacity of the existing entrance while simultaneously allowing for the removal of the old building and installation of the subway upgrades. Responsible for all architecture and engineering while also providing construction support services throughout the project, our team was able to help our client meet their schedule while also keeping the station open.
