Evaluating automated HEV options on the road to safer, cleaner mines
Seeking operational improvements by way of automated and electric trucks
Our client operates a large ore mining complex in the United States. For years, they have operated class 8 trucks to haul ore from mines to their processing facilities. Now, they are looking to invest in new technology to increase the safety and efficiency of these operations.
We were hired along with a subconsultant to conduct a prefeasibility study that investigated automated heavy electric vehicle (HEV) operations to haul thousands of tons of ore each year. Our team conducted an HEV Industry Analysis to understand which suppliers could meet the demanding conditions of the operation. We chose the most promising alternatives and, using vehicle specifications, designed ore loading and unloading processes to leverage the benefits of automation. The study reports the feasibility of operating Level 4 automated HEVs for the client’s highly demanding operation.
By working directly with suppliers, our team was able to provide a realistic look into the future of over-the-road trucking and its impact on mining operations. As our client maximizes operations, they may be an early adopter of this technology and serve as a valuable use-case for similar sites, vehicles, and technology developers. |
