One for all, all for one at the El Monte Transit Center
Providing an elegant, creative, and sustainable architectural element that will serve as an anchor for transit development
When the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) sought to rebuild the El Monte Transit Center, they called on our team to provide advanced conceptual engineering services and owner’s representation during the Design/Build phase. The El Monte Station was expanded to more than double its original size and accommodates twice the capacity serving Metro Express and Local routes, Foothill Transit, Greyhound, El Monte Transit, and more.
The project consists of 29 bus berths with an additional 20 layover bays designated for various transit agencies serving the station. Framed by an iconic canopy and two elegant single-story buildings on each side of the entry plaza, we created a grand entry for passenger access. The buildings house transit supportive retail space—one of which is a bike hub. The second building is a dedicated transit store with office and support space for Metro, Foothill Transit, and Greyhound fare media sales and customer service.
The angled walls of the entry buildings and fabric canopy set the tone of the design, which is carried throughout the details of the paving, platform canopies, building materials, and passenger amenities. El Monte Station has achieved LEED-NC Gold certification and incorporates numerous innovations, including reduced heat gain in paving and buildings, LED lighting, increased ventilation, and daylight strategies. |
