Description The additional financing aims to improve IPC for COVID-19 and other communicable diseases through interventions to enhance WASH in low-income flood-prone urban areas of the Chennai-Kosasthalaiyar basin. It will strengthen the integrated risk management of epidemics and disasters.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy Chennai is hard hit by Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The major challenge in fighting the pandemic has been high disease transmission among the poor in densely populated pockets that lack adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services and associated infection prevention and control (IPC). Further, Chennai is low and flat, increasingly exposed to water-related climate challenges. Many of the urban poor live in substandard housing located alongside watercourses and in other low-lying areas, which are vulnerable to the dual risks of flooding and pandemic. The proposed interventions are consistent with ADBs country partnership strategy for India.
