Project Detail |
Cardno, now Stantec, in consultation with the City of Melbourne’s landscape architects, provided a civil design package to improve pedestrian access and safety to the Princess Theatre, Australias oldest surviving entertainment establishment.
The design included a new large curved bluestone block seating and two tier wall with improved landscaping and installation of hostile vehicle protection bollards to adjoining footpaths.
The footpaths were reconstructed in bluestone and surface drainage was improved with the installation of strip drains to catch all storm water surface flows.
Removable fin bollards were installed and placed at regular intervals for pedestrian protection. The bollards are used to prevent vehicles from entering pedestrian areas and are part of a plan to strengthen public security across Melbournes central city.
The construction of a raised zebra crossing on Little Bourke Street provides pedestrian crossing priority. The raised platform gives the pedestrian crossing prominence and encourages motorists to slow down on approach to the crossing.
One of the key challenges with the design of this project was incorporating existing underground rail services and improving the local drainage network to mitigate flooding.
The strong collaborative relationship between the project team and the City of Melbourne’s landscape architect saw the delivery of a fit for purpose design with low maintenance infrastructure. |
