Australia Project Notice - Protecting Bay Trail Brighton Beach

Project Notice

PNR 47053
Project Name Protecting Bay Trail Brighton Beach
Project Detail The Bay Trail comprises 17km shared bike and pedestrian path along Port Phillip Bay, South-East Melbourne. The Cardno team were engaged by Bayside City Council to review and design the existing rock revetment to protect the new path from tide and wave erosion at Brighton Beach. Cardno’s multidisciplinary team of Surveying, Civil, Geotechnical, Structural, Coastal and Construction Engineers were engaged to provide design, authority liaison (Department of Environment Land, Water & Planning Marine and Coastal Act consent & Parks Vic approvals), feature and level survey, coastal modelling, plus tender and construction phase services. The project was complex in nature, requiring expert advice from our coastal team to assist in developing various coastal management strategies for hard engineering methods, preventing erosion and flooding plus protecting the shoreline. Cardno worked closely with Bayside City Council and incorporated local community feedback to achieve the best outcome. Following an extensive review, the team were able to provide a more cost-effective solution by upgrading existing infrastructure. This resulted in the removal of the rock revetment and renewing the timber groyne, a wooden seawall built at right angles to the beach. The bay trail duplication is a dedicated path used by thousands of cyclists and pedestrians every day, all year round. The upgrade of the existing timber groyne will help protect one of Melbourne’s most famous bayside beaches from erosion and protect the new path from tide and wave deterioration.
